Living in Poughkeepsie
Called the Queen City of the Hudson, and for a short time after the Revolution, the capital of New York State.
Poughkeepsie is two places that share a name: the City of Poughkeepsie, the county seat on the Hudson, and the separate Town of Poughkeepsie around it. The Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Walkway Over the Hudson both cross the river here, the Bardavon 1869 Opera House is still running, and old factory buildings in the city are being turned into homes, restaurants and galleries.

Neighborhoods and housing
In the city, the historic districts include Academy Street, Balding Avenue, Dwight-Hooker Avenue, Garfield Place, Mill Street-North Clover Street, Mount Carmel and Union Street, and former factory buildings now hold apartments.
The town takes in Arlington, Spackenkill, Red Oaks Mill, Rochdale, Crown Heights, Fairview and New Hamburg, a river hamlet with a marina and its own Metro-North station.
Essie's Restaurant, Brasserie 292 and Mill House Brewing Company are in the city, and Shadows on the Hudson sits on the waterfront.
The Walkway Over the Hudson, an 1889 railroad bridge reopened for walking and biking in 2009, is a state historic park. The William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail leaves from the Walkway and runs east through the town, and Bowdoin Park covers 301 acres with views of the river.
Poughkeepsie station is the northern end of Metro-North's Hudson Line and an Amtrak stop. On the October 2026 timetable, weekday morning trains reach Grand Central in 89 to 109 minutes. New Hamburg station serves the south end of the town, and the north end of Manhattan is about 75 miles by road.
The City of Poughkeepsie is served by the Poughkeepsie City School District. In the Town of Poughkeepsie, homes fall in one of four districts depending on the address.
District lines follow addresses, not town names. Check a specific address with the district before relying on it.
Is the City of Poughkeepsie the same as the Town of Poughkeepsie?
No. The city is the county seat on the river. The town is a separate municipality that surrounds it, with its own hamlets, taxes and school districts.
How long is the train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central?
On the October 2026 Metro-North timetable, weekday morning trains from Poughkeepsie take 89 to 109 minutes.
