Living in Beacon
A Main Street between a mountain and the river.
Beacon is a small city on the east shore of the Hudson with Mount Beacon behind it, named for the signal fires lit on the mountain during the Revolution. Lower Main Street is a historic district of Italianate storefronts, the walkable Main Street runs on from there, and Dia Beacon fills a former Nabisco box-printing plant on the river.

Neighborhoods and housing
The city divides into Riverside and Mountainside sections, the North and South tree streets, the Main Street district and the Derk east of Fishkill Creek. Byrnsville, also called Tioronda, and Groveville are its historic hamlets.
Main Street carries most of the restaurants, including Brothers Trattoria, Beacon Falls Cafe, Baja 328, Barking Frog and Beacon Bread Company.
Hudson Highlands State Park covers Mount Beacon just east and south of the city, with trails and a fire tower. On the river are Long Dock Park and Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, and boats run out to Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island.
Beacon station is on Metro-North's Hudson Line, and weekday morning trains reach Grand Central in 73 to 92 minutes on the October 2026 timetable. By car, New York City is about 55 miles south, Poughkeepsie about 20 minutes north and Stewart International Airport about 20 minutes over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. The free Beacon Loop bus links the station, Dia Beacon, Main Street and the Mount Beacon lot.
Beacon is served by the Beacon City School District.
District lines follow addresses, not town names. Check a specific address with the district before relying on it.
